Have you ever used musical practice as a form of meditation? This month, try setting aside 5 - 10 minutes each day to practice. Work with a simple rhythm that you already know and understand, and rather than trying to “get” somewhere, see the time as a means to clear your mind, a meditation even.

Don’t try and do anything fancy - no fills or breaks - the simpler the groove, the better. The aim of this exercise is to experience deepening into a rhythm - and moving inside it - to become part of the rhythm (!!) (as with the painting metaphor - “When you start a painting, it is somewhat outside you. At the conclusion, you seem to move inside the painting.” Fernando Botero
